RickPlatt.com is a blog about manufacturing and suburbs. How fitting that there is a book out there titled Manufacturing Suburbs.
One review of Robert Lewis' book summarizes the book in a way that also tends to define suburbs as I see them, saying, "Although the word suburb means literally under the city, or, more loosely, subordinate to the city, many suburbs have become part of the city proper or are not actually dependent on a nearby city for their success."
The blending of manufacturing and residential development is the interesting part. This 2004 book is on my must-read-in-the-future list now.
