Choose wisely. A wrong decision has a lasting, negative impact.
The story is Massillon, Ohio's leaders were given two options from which to choose for a state institution to be built in their city. Massillon State Hospital for the Insane opened in 1898. It's been closed for years now. Massillon State's annual economic impact is $0.
Kent got the other institution--a university that opened in 1910. Kent State's annual impact is measured in hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
Oops.
This column is a regular sharing of the family, work, and community perspective of Rick Platt, President and CEO of the Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority.
